Pestsaule.

Commissioned after the plague of 1679 by Leopold I to commemorate the eradication of the disease from the city. Several plague columns were built, but this was by far the most imposing and flamboyant. It was realised in the Baroque style by Matthias Rauchmiller, Lodovico Burnacini and Johann Bernard Fischer whilst the theme and content was devised by the zealous Catholic Jesuit order; experts in religious propaganda and representation.
